News from the Principal
Dear SMS Parents,
Beginning in May, every Tuesday and Wednesday SMS students will take the CSTs mandated annually by the state. Our goal this year is to gain 35 API points with students earning proficient scores in each category of the test. Regular classroom instruction to all students on the campus will continue on each of these dates.
It is very important that your child arrives to school on time every day, especially on Tuesdays and Wednesdays this month and participates in the testing. One of the measurements used to evaluate the school’s performance on the CSTs is how many of our students participate in the tests. Every student counts! Please be sure your child rests the night before each test date and eats a nutritional breakfast. Each morning all students will have their nutrition break prior to testing. As testing time gets closer, please make sure your child is taking advantage of the Compass Odyssey icon on his/her portal to help review for the CST. Students can also access the following website to practice for the CST: http://starsamplequestions.org
Strong student performance on the CSTs is very important for your student and SMS. Bonsall Union School District’s Board Policy states students not scoring proficient in math and English Language Arts may be placed in an accelerated skills class in lieu of their elective choice. Our current eighth graders will be held to the same proficiency standards as they sign up for their courses and electives at Fallbrook High School for next year. The performance on the CSTs also informs our teachers about the specific individual needs of your child. The CSTs provide valuable information about the skills of each SMS student. The scores we receive in August will be used to adjust our curriculum and teaching based upon the results of the CSTs. We are able to teach your child more effectively when we know what skills need improvement and what skills have been mastered.
In closing, let me state what I truly believe: The SMS staff is committed to teaching and enriching our students on all levels – academic, physical, emotional, and social. The CSTs are an opportunity for each and every one of our students to demonstrate how much learning and growth occurs here on a daily basis. I believe that if every student on our campus will simply do his or her personal best, the CST results will illustrate to the entire state of California the excellent programs and students here at Sullivan Middle School.
Please take the time to talk to your child about the importance of these tests. Thank you for your help and support.
Sincerely,
Janet M. Whiddon
Principal
